International Journal of Imaging Systems and
Technology
is seeking original and unpublished manuscripts for a Special Issue
on Applied Color Image Processing, scheduled for publication in
November/December of 2007.
Color image processing has established
itself as a very important research area primarily due to the rapid
development of image sensors, digital imaging and visual communication
technologies, image databases, and video and multimedia systems.
Extraordinary growth in the technologies and applications for color
image processing has allowed for many interesting results concerning
filtering, enhancement, restoration, edge detection, analysis,
compression, manipulation, and evaluation of color images. The
proliferation of digital cameras, image-enabled consumer electronics,
and color displays and printers has further underscored the importance
of conducting systematic research in the field of color image
processing.
Specialized areas of digital color
imaging usually require to use special, application-dependent approaches
to achieve the desired performance and efficiency of the image
processing solution. For example, modern color image filtering solutions
rely on the trichromatic theory of color to avoid color artifacts in the
output. The use of color information in combination with the structural
and spatial characteristics of the acquired sensor data is essential in
digital camera image processing, including demosaicking, spatial
interpolation, and enhancement to overcome the limitations of the image
sensors in order to produce visually-pleasing digital color images.
Undoubtedly, color has an important role in visual scene understanding
and greatly improves semantic analysis of the digital images. Because of
its descriptive nature, color has been extensively used in the areas
such as feature detection, image retrieval, visual data analysis, and
object recognition. Since the range of color-driven computer vision,
video surveillance, multimedia and biomedical applications extends with
advances in hardware and software, there is a definite need for new
techniques, algorithms, and solutions to improve the current digital
color imaging systems and enable the development of color imaging in
emerging applications.
This special issue aims to
systematically focus on recent advances in digital color image
acquisition, analysis, processing, and display, exploring emerging
applications of digital color image processing. Submitted articles must
not have been previously published and must not be currently submitted
for publication elsewhere. Topics of interest include, but are not
limited to, the following:
